Your Rain Gutters Could Help Fight Zika Virus

According to the Tampa Bay Times, Zika virus could be making its way to Florida (specifically, to our local area) soon. Here’s what the report had to say:

It is very important to note that there have been no locally acquired infections reported in the United States, with the exception of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. But because the Aedes aegypti mosquito lives in Florida, and with the large amount of travel to and from Zika endemic areas, there is a real risk for a possible outbreak of locally acquired infections.

So how can your gutters help?

It turns out, they can either help the situation, or make it worse. Rain gutters that are clogged are likely to be full of standing water, which is exactly what mosquitoes need to breed. Keeping mosquito populations down and under control may be the key to keeping Zika virus out of Florida.

While Zika virus is virtually symptom free, it can cause birth defects and it can be sexually transmitted. So get your gutters cleaned and let that water flow freely. You might also take a moment to review some of our previous posts about mosquito control, just so you can take a few more steps to let the Zika virus know that it is not welcome in the state of Florida.

Even if you’re not too terribly worried about Zika virus it pays to keep mosquitoes out of your yard. After all, it’s hard to enjoy summer meals outdoors or anything else when the mosquitoes start to swarm.

Don’t want to get out there to clean your gutters in this heat? We understand. Fortunately, we do offer gutter cleaning services in addition to our gutter installation services. If you live in our Tampa metro area service area go ahead and give us a call. Our gutter cleaning services are reasonably priced, and they’ll save you from a hoard of headaches.
