Does My House Need Gutters?

As a leading gutter installer here in Central Florida you would expect me to say yes, every house needs rain gutters! The truth is, some homes don’t need them. Your home may not need gutters if:

  • You have a 6” to 10” wide roof overhang.
  • You have an apron of concrete, gravel, or stone around your house, and an adequate drainage system to support it.
  • The ground slopes away from your house.
  • Your roof is very shallow.
  • You have an effective rain diverter already installed.
  • You live in an area that doesn’t get a lot of rain.

For Florida residents, of course, that last criteria is the big problem. We get plenty of rain, so gutters are usually a very good investment in this state.

For example, according to Weather.com, Wesley Chapel gets 54.28” of rain annually alone — more than enough to make gutters a great idea.

Don’t make a few common mistakes about gutters. It’s easy to make some very costly assumptions.

For example, if you live in a new construction home the builder might have assured you that they’ve built the home so that the ground slopes away from the house, providing adequate runoff. They may convince you that you don’t need to worry (in reality, they often try to cut costs by leaving gutters off).

Builders do dig out the ground that way, but the ground can often settle during the refill. Homeowners aren’t always aware this has happened. If you see water pooling around the base of your house it’s probably time to call for help.

You also shouldn’t assume that you don’t need gutters just because you happened to buy a home that didn’t have them. A house can be sold without gutters for a variety of different reasons. Sometimes, homeowners just remove old gutters without replacing them, for example, because they don’t like cleaning them or they couldn’t afford the replacement at the time.

It’s a good idea to consult with a gutter contractor like ours before you take your chances. Call us and we’ll come out and take a look at your home to see if you need gutters or not. If you do, we’ll also give you a free estimate on the spot!
