Do Algae Resistant Shingles Work?

algae-resistant-shinglesIn a previous post we talked about ways to get moss off of your roof and out of your gutters. But did you know that algae can be just as big of a problem for a roof?

Because algae can destroy a roof’s appearance and a home’s value, many of our customers ask our opinion about algae resistant shingles. We decided to take a few minutes to explain what these shingles are and how they work.

What are Algae Resistant Shingles?

Algae resistant shingles were created by the 3M company. They achieve the resistant effect by embedding copper granules into the shingles.

The copper makes it difficult for algae to grow. When it rains, trace amounts of the copper will wash over your roof, killing the algae and helping your roof look newer, longer.

Do Algae Resistant Shingles Work?

For the most part, algae resistant shingles do work. In some parts of the country, algae resistant shingles may be all that you require to keep algae away from your roof.

Here in Florida, however, we’ve got a perpetually hot, wet environment that algae really loves. The humidity is especially friendly to algae.

This means that in Florida, algae-resistant shingles sometimes are successful only at slowing algae growth rather than removing them altogether.

Cleaning Roof Algae

If roof algae does start to show up on your roof you can usually get rid of it with an OxyClean wash. Wet down the entire surface of your roof in the early morning, while your roof is still cool.

Let the solution sit for half an hour. Then you can use a scrub brush to get rid of any visible algae before rinsing the mixture away with your hose.

You should not have to do this task very often if you have algae resistant shingles. In this, they’re like gutter guards. They don’t free you from unpleasant chores entirely, but you don’t have to do these chores as frequently.

We’re gutter contractors serving Land o’ Lakes, Wesley Chapel, New Port Richey and the rest of the Tampa Bay area. Call us today if you’d like a free estimate on new seamless aluminum gutters.
